Voro: "Valencia CF mean everything to me"

Voro González is a true Valencianista: A loyal servant to the club as a player, youth team coach, emergency first team coach, delegate and -currently- the director of first team organisation.

In his playing days, he featured for Valencia CF for 8 seasons, playing 288 games and experiencing relegation, promotion and many magic moments. VCF Media spoke with Voro during the Centenary week to get his thoughts on what the club means to him.

From L’Alcudia to Valencia CF

I came to VCF as just another kid. I was playing in my town for the first team, in the Regional Preferente division. At the end of the season Valencia CF came in for me, and I moved to VCF Juvenil. I had to go off to do military service in Tenerife later on, and there I played for Tenerife in the Segunda División. It went very well for me and I grew as player. I'd played at Mestalla in the Tercera División, and it was a big step for me to get experience in the second tier. Following that, I went directly into the VCF first team for the 1985/86 season.

Debuting against Valladolid

The memory that always sticks in your mind is your debut. I remember that it was the first LaLiga game of the 1985/86 season, against Valladolid, and we won 2-1.

In the first season under Espárrago, we were coming off the back of a relegation struggle and we had a great year. We placed third, and nobody could believe it. The next year we continued with the same philosophy, the same coach and some new players, taking second place. I remember a game against Barça at home that we won 2-1, and I scored the opening goal. There was also a comeback from behind against Real Madrid in which we had been trailing until the 90th minute.

Being Valencian and a Valencianista

For a footballer who comes from here, being able to say that I've played for Valencia CF in the Primera División is something that I was always pursuing. It was a fantastic era. It wasn't like today, as you could only play with two overseas players. I think that I only played with eight or ten different players from abroad in my eight years at the club. The team was always the same, and we went on trips together.

Eight years playing for VCF

Just like now, at that time it was really hard to win trophies, because Real Madrid and Barcelona had a stronghold on the top two spots in LaLiga. When you play for a team for eight years, you don't just get attached to the dressing room: You get attached to everything about the club.

A unique stadium

Mestalla is your home, where you live and where you work. It's an honour to be part of this entity with 100 years of history. Valencia CF mean everything to me. The club is my life and I'm very proud to belong to it.
