MATCH REPORT: VALENCIA CF LOSE 0-1 TO ATHLETIC CLUB
The team suffer defeat in their final home game
Valencia CF lost 1-0 to Athletic Club on LALIGA EA Sports Matchday 37 at Mestalla, as an Álex Berenguer second-half goal decided the final home match of the season. Valencia CF's clearest chance was a Diakhaby header that was not converted and they will look to get back to winning ways against Real Betis on Matchday 38.
The match began with great intensity and energy in every duel for the ball, as both teams tried to gain possession to build attacks and create danger. With no clear chances until almost the half-hour mark, the first approach on goal went to the home team, and a backheel from a cross from the right by Guruzeta.
Valencia CF tried to respond with a through ball from Enzo Barrenechea, looking for André Almeida to go through on the goalkeeper. Athletic Club had a free kick that almost caused a surprise after hitting another player, and the first half ended with Valencia CF's clearest chance, a Diakhaby header that Unai Simón saved on the line.
After the break, Valencia CF came out onto the pitch with the the intention of stepping up the pace and trying to overcome the Basque side's very well organised defensive system.
Athletic Club took the lead in the 71st minute with a shot from outside the box by Berenguer, completely out of reach of Mamardashvili. Valencia CF were unable to respond before the end.
After the disappointing result of this match, Valencia CF will look to end the season with a win next week against Real Betis.
