Valencia CF commemorate 100 years since Mestalla hosted its first international match
Spain defeated Italy on 14 June 1925 in a historic fixture for the city, Spanish football and our iconic stadium
Mestalla hosted its first-ever international fixture on 14 June 1925 as Spain took on Italy in what would become a landmark moment in the history of our Club, the city of Valencia and Spanish football.
More than 17,000 fans filled the stands, turning Mestalla into a cauldron of football passion. Juan Errazquin scored the only goal of the game, while legendary goalkeeper Ricardo Zamora put in a heroic display with 12 crucial saves to secure the clean sheet. Valencia CF’s own Eduardo Cubells also featured in the starting XI, becoming the first player in Club history to represent Spain at international level.
The significance of that match was immense. It cemented Mestalla’s reputation as one of Spanish football’s most prestigious venues. In recognition of the occasion, Valencia CF commissioned a commemorative marble plaque to mark the event.
Mestalla has continued to be a proud home for the national team, having hosted 33 international matches to date, the most recent being Spain vs Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarter-final in 2025.
